The Male Menopause
Whilst the female menopause is well defined with sudden abrupt falls in the levels of oestrogen and progesterone giving rise to the classical symptoms (hot flushes, mood changes, vaginal dryness etc) the male menopause (correctly named the Andropause) is more controversial.
In men testosterone levels fall from the early 20's onwards and by the early 50's the falling levels may be associated with a broad range of symptoms these include:
·
Decreased vigour/physical strength
·
Abdominal obesity
·
Decreased libido (desire/interest for sex)
·
Poor erectile function/weakness of ejaculation/ reduced sensation of orgasm
·
Decreased sense of well being/ irritability/ depression
·
Lack of motivation/ difficulties with short term memory/ lowered self esteem
·
Insomnia
Increasingly the concept of TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) is being evaluated. Importantly the aim is to replace testosterone minimising symptoms and restoring libido without inducing large swings in testosterone levels or exceeding the 'normal range'. In effect TRT aims to 'turn the clock back' and restore testosterone levels to the upper normal range.
The latest forms of testosterone replacement are available from the clinic after full appraisal and serological testing. Obviously prior to commencing therapy the pros and cons in each individual case will be discussed along with guidelines for continued monitoring.
